Chief Gary Sparks

Chief Gary Sparks began working for the City of Oxford at the fire station when he was 15 years old. Chief Sparks worked under Chief Dewey Webb, washing trucks, cleaning the station, and performing various tasks around the facility.  In 1983, Chief Webb approached Chief Sparks about joining the volunteer force, and on May 12, 1983, he officially became a member of the Oxford Volunteer Fire Department.

On February 13, 1987, Chief Sparks became a full-time member of the Anniston Fire Department.  Chief Sparks rose through the ranks there and was promoted to Assistant Fire Chief on January 3, 2003. After 20 years of dedicated service, Chief Sparks retired from the Anniston Fire Department on February 13, 2007.

On March 3, 2007, Chief Sparks became the full-time Fire Chief for the City of Oxford.  Chief Sparks replaced Chief Eugene Smallwood, who retired on March 2, 2007.

​Chief Sparks is active in several civic organizations in his community. He has served on the Alabama Joint Fire Council. He served Alabama’s fire service for eight years with dedication and insight as a Personnel Standards & Education Commission member with the Alabama Fire College. He is a Past President of the Alabama Fire Chief’s Association and was honored as the 2015 Alabama Fire Chief of the Year.

Assistant Chief Ben Stewart

Ben Stewart is the Assistant Chief of the Oxford Fire Department. He has served the City of Oxford for over 25 years, beginning as a volunteer firefighter in December 1993 and later becoming part-time while also working at a local company as a Health, Safety, and Environmental Specialist. 

Ben began serving as a full-time firefighter in April 2007. Over the years, he has attained many certifications that have advanced his career with the city. Assistant Chief Stewart is actively involved in the city by serving on boards such as the Main Street Board, which has led to numerous projects being completed to enhance our community. He is also a member of several statewide and regional organizations, including the Alabama Fire Chiefs Membership Committee. Ben is proud to call Oxford his home and continuously wants to serve this amazing city.

The Oxford Fire Department is split into three different shifts with each firefighter working 24 hour shifts every 3rd day. These shifts are led by Battalion Chief Curtis Cupp (A-Shift), Battalion Chief Stephen Muncher (B-Shift), and Battalion Chief Donnie Adams (C-Shift).

 

Prevention

Captain Jonathan Roberts
Inspection and Prevention Division Officer

Captain Roberts has been firefighter with Oxford Fire Department for 18 years and an EMT Basic for 12 years. He is responsible for preparing public education and fire prevention material for fire department, new business inspections in partnership with the Oxford Building Department, as well as coordinate annual fire department business surveys. Captain Roberts helps ensure the Oxford Fire Department maintains an excellent ISO rating by providing invaluable public education. Captain Roberts' responsibility to the safety of Oxford's citizens and visitors is ensured annually with our business surveys.

Training

Captain Brandon Slick
Training Division Officer

Captain Slick has been a paramedic and firefighter for over 10 years, the last 8 has been serving the City of Oxford. He is responsible for preparing training courses and outlines for fire department personnel to maintain their annual Firefighter and EMT certifications. Captain Slick helps ensure the Oxford Fire Department maintains an excellent ISO rating by providing continuous training for the department. He also teaches our annual Fire Fighter Bridge Recruit Program during the summer and our annual EMT classes during the Fall and Spring. These classes allow aspiring firefighters and current firefighters to further their careers and skills. In addition to these classes and programs Captain Slick is a certified CPR instructor.
