Oxford Baptist Church

  • Founded in 1836 as Friendship United Baptist Church
  • By 1841, 131 members were meeting in a log structure on West 9th Street.
  • Elisha Sylvannus Simmons donated the land at 95 East Oak Street where a new church was built.
  • Changed its name to First Baptist Church of Oxford in 1887.
  • The original frame structure was torn down to make room for a modified Richardsonian brick building which has been renovated and expanded many times with the most recent being in 2001.
