The Oxford Civic Center played host on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, for what was billed as the inaugural State of Agriculture/Tomato Luncheon.
More than 120 farmers and area agriculture students attended the event, which began with a program of speakers from farming, conservation, and agriculture experiences, with Rick Pate, state commissioner of agriculture and industries, making the keynote remarks.
Jakob Williamson, public affairs coordinator of the Calhoun County Area Chamber of Commerce, said the event was a major augmentation of the annual event usually held at the Chamber office.
Williamson gave credit to Jennifer Hudson of the Choccolocco Creek Watershed for the change of venue and format.
“We have done this for a few years now, and this year Jennifer had the idea to have a tomato sandwich luncheon along with what we regularly do,” Williamson said. “She has done a fantastic job.”
The change of venue also allowed participation from area FFA and 4-H students, as well as students from the Calhoun County Career Tech culinary program, who contributed to the preparation of the lunch and pastries.
Mayor Alton Craft welcomed the crowd with remarks, beginning a series of good-hearted stories from all the speakers about their love for the featured lunch of the day – tomato sandwiches.
He also praised the large number of students who came to the event.
“It makes a mayor proud to see all these young people involved like this,” Craft said
