Historic Main Street in Oxford starts a series of walks through the city's history
By Brian Graves
April 7, 2026
Historic Main Street Oxford hosted the first of two Historic Walking Tours on Main on Saturday, April 4, 2026. The walks are being held in conjunction with the city’s participation in the America 250 celebrations.
During the walk, HMSO director Hunter Gentry described some of the historic moments of the city and used pictures from the past to compare with the same areas as they have developed into the Oxford of 2026.
The walk featured visits to three homes – one which has been preserved, one that many hope will be preserved in the future, and one which is currently in the preservation process.
Walkers were also treated to a special presentation at Dodson Memorial Presbyterian Church, originally built in 1857 and believed to have once been part of the Underground Railroad.
The next walk, set for Saturday, April 18, will focus on the Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Walkers will begin the 2-hour journey starting at Simmons Park at 9 a.m. Participation in the walk is free, and no registration is required.
